IEEE Türkiye Section Seminar ‘When AI Solves the Problem, What Does It Mean to Learn?’

Generative AI is rapidly reshaping how students engage with engineering and computing education. These changes challenge long-standing assumptions about learning, assessment, and academic integrity. Yet, despite their urgency, we still do not have clear answers.

This session does not aim to provide a how-to guide or a definitive framework. Instead, it offers an inquiry-driven and provocative exploration of the questions educators should be asking.

The discussion focuses on key tensions. If AI can generate correct solutions, what does it mean to understand? If traditional assignments can be completed by AI, what are we actually assessing? How should learning experiences be redesigned in response?

The presenter will draw on classroom experiments, including both successes and failures, and share concrete examples of integrating generative AI into engineering and computing courses. These examples will serve as a foundation for collective reflection.

Participants will leave with a sharper set of questions, practical ideas for experimentation, and a framework for navigating uncertainty in their teaching, rather than a set of prescribed solutions.
